More than 1,200 firefighters aided by water-dropping helicopters battled a wind-driven wildfire raging out of control in Northern California on Monday, threatening homes and other structures as thick black smoke drifted across the San Francisco Bay Area. The so-called County Fire, which broke out on Saturday afternoon in rural Yolo County, west of Sacramento, has already blackened more than 50 square miles of grass, brush and dense scrub oak and was only 3 percent contained as of Monday afternoon. Scott McLean of the California Department of Forestry and Fire protection said the job of hand crews and bulldozer operators trying to cut containment lines was made more difficult by high winds, which were blowing embers and starting new spot fires.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives settled a row over migration that threatened to topple her fragile governing coalition late on Monday evening after talks with her rebellious interior minister led him to drop his threat to resign. Emerging after five hours of talks, Horst Seehofer, leader of Bavaria's Christian Social Union (CSU), told reporters he would remain in his post after a deal with Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) that he said would stem illegal immigration. "After intensive discussions between the CDU and CSU we have reached an agreement on how we can in future prevent illegal immigration on the border between Germany and Austria," Seehofer said as he left the CDU's Berlin headquarters.

Bad weather has hampered the rescue effort for the youngsters, aged between 11 and 16, and their 25-year-old coach through the snaking Tham Luang cave -- one of Thailand's longest, and toughest to explore. It is not known why the team ventured into the cave, but they had been there before -- some of the boys knew it well. Then the heavy rains started and water likely rushed in through the cave's main entrance while simultaneously seeping through porous limestone walls.

Guggenheim Partners, overseen by billionaire Mark Walter, is facing a lawsuit claiming it defrauded annuity investors by saddling an insurance affiliate with risky assets, and siphoning cash for purposes including Walter's purchase of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. It came as Guggenheim, which said it has more than $305 billion of assets under management, tries to quell client concerns after a year of bad press over its corporate culture. Guggenheim in April said it was cooperating with a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission probe into an asset management unit.

Police in India's capital said they found 11 bodies in a home in mysterious circumstances on Sunday, 10 of them blindfolded and hanging from the roof. The victims belonged to a family and most had lived in one home in Burari village in the northern part of New Delhi, said police officer Vineet Kumar. Police are investigating whether the victims - four men, three women and four girls - died by suicide or were killed, Kumar said, adding that no suicide note was found. There were no bullet marks on the bodies of the victims, and there was no sign of forced entry into the house, Kumar said. Ten bodies, blindfolded by cotton and pieces of cloth, were found hanging from an iron grill used as a ventilator in the home's courtyard, while the body of a 70-year-old woman was lying on the floor of the house, said a police official who spoke on condition of anonymity, in line with department policy. Indian policemen secure the area near a building where 11 family members were found dead  Credit: AFP  The family was living in the house for more than two decades, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported. It said the house belongs to a businessman who ran a plywood shop and dairy. The newspaper said that at around 8am Sunday, a neighbor with whom the businessman used to go for morning walks went to see him and found the door of the house open and the 10 people, including the businessman, hanging. He raised an alarm and people called the police. "It is a tragic incident. Police are investigating. ... Let's wait for their investigation to be over," said New Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who visited the scene. In a video posted on Twitter by Kejriwal's ruling party, the neighbors are heard telling Kejriwal that the family was busy with wedding preparations. A neighbor of the family said they couldn't have committed suicide, New Delhi Television reported. The neighbor said he spoke to one of the victims Saturday night and found no sign of any stress, the report said. Indian TV channels broadcast interviews with neighbors who said the family did not have any discord among themselves. Police official Rajesh Khurana told reporters that all angles were being investigated. "We can't rule out anything," he said.

Birth of a planet captured for first time as gas giant bigger than Jupiter swirls into existence

Added: 02.07.2018 17:43 | 1 views | 0 comments

Even by astronomical standards it is a discovery that is out of this world. Scientists have for the first time witnessed the birth of a planet, a huge gas giant many times the size of Jupiter, swirling into existence 370 light years from Earth.  The theory of how gas planets form from a vortex of hydrogen and helium molecules captivated by their own gravity, is now widely accepted by scientists. But it has never been seen before, until now. Today scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg and the SPHERE instrument consortium at the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile, released a spectacular image of the birth  The planet, currently known as PDS 70b, is shown orbiting within a huge spinning ‘protoplanetary disc’ of gas and dust, which proves it is continuing to accumulate matter, and so is not yet fully formed.  The newborn sits within a 5.4 million year old solar system, orbiting a star called PDS 70 at a distance of 1.8 billion miles.  The planet stands out clearly in the image, visible as a bright point to the right of the blackened centre. The dark region at the centre of the image is due to a coronagraph, a mask which blocks the blinding light of the central star and allows astronomers to detect the faint light from the planet. “For our study, we selected PDS 70, a star that was already suspected of having a young planet circling around it,” says Miriam Keppler, doctoral student at MPIA. “These discs around young stars are the birthplaces of planets, but so far only a handful of observations have detected hints of baby planets in them. Space exploration | Recent exciting discoveries “The problem is that until now, most of these planet candidates could just have been features in the disc." This glimpse of the dust-shrouded birth of a planet was only possible because of ESO's SPHERE instrument, which studies exoplanets and discs around nearby stars using a technique known as high-contrast imaging.  Using the instrument, astronomers were able measure the brightness of the planet at different wavelengths, and find out its composition.  It is located roughly three billion kilometres from the central star, roughly equivalent to the distance between Uranus and the Sun. The planet takes about 120 years to orbit its host star.  Spectral analysis shows PDS 70 b is a giant gas planet, with a mass a few times that of Jupiter and a surface temperature of around 1,000C, making it much hotter than any planet in our own solar system.  Signs of life in our Solar System Thomas Henning, director at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and leader of the teams, summarises the scientific adventure: "After more than a decade of enormous efforts to build this high-tech machine, now SPHERE enables us to reap the harvest with the discovery of baby planets.” To date, astronomers have discovered around 3,800 exoplanets outside of the solar system but have never seen one being born. “The results give us a new window onto the complex and poorly-understood early stages of planetary evolution," said Dr André Müller, leader of the second team to investigate the young planet.  “We needed to observe a planet in a young star's disc to really understand the processes behind planet formation."

A man was arrested on Saturday on charges of starting a forest fire in Colorado that has destroyed structures and forced hundreds to evacuate their homes in one of dozens of wildfires raging across the drought-hit U.S. southwest. Jesper Joergensen, 52, was taken into custody for suspected arson that started the Springs Fire, the most active of around 10 blazes in Colorado, the state hardest hit by fires, according to Costilla County Sheriff's Office Facebook page. Joergensen is not a U.S. citizen and will be handed over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement once he has faced arson charges, said a Costilla County detention officer.
